Recently I was telling our Facebook friends to have a safe Waitangi Weekend. It's advice I should have followed myself as it turns out.

Are you familiar with the Xbox Kinect game console? You know, the ones where you dance around like a lunatic in your living room and it recognises your movements. I was playing the tennis game over the weekend with the family and I lined up for a particularly large smash shot. Unbeknownst to me my arm had been inching ever closer to the glass light fitting on the ceiling. You can see where this is going can't you? SMASH! My imaginary tennis racket, which in reality was my hand, landed directly on the light shade sending glass shards at speed across the living room and cutting my thumb to ribbons in the process. Exit, stage left!

You know in the movies when the hero jumps through a plate glass window or punches their fist through a car windscreen without receiving even the slightest nick or graze? Lies! All Lies!!

About half a pack of sticking plasters, a litre or two of blood down the drain (I exaggerate) and some Glad Wrap later and I was back in the lounge with the vacuum cleaner clearing up the mess I'd made only to find a large shard of glass embedded in the wall! In case you missed that I said 'embedded in the wall!' It seems I don't know my own strength but what I do know is that I'm very grateful nobody was between me and that wall.

Fortunately the digit didn't need stitches but it has been impressed on me just how much we use our thumbs in everyday life (it's a good thing I only type with my two index fingers...peck...peck...peck..). I wasn't even sure I was going to be able to do my pants up this morning without help. I managed in the end with some clever finger yoga and by securing my tongue between my teeth. The technique really is all in the way you hold your mouth!

So friends, the next time I tell you all to be safe out there, do me a favour and tell me to practice what I preach!
